Original Poem – On the Sunny Morning We Were Wed

    ‘On the Sunny Morning We Were Wed’

On the sunny morning we were wed,
In the twisted winter-withered wood,
Hidden seeds grew green, nested under
reddest roses with their stinging thorns.
I met you under summer’s midnight moon;
Remember how it stunned our wondrous eyes,
Growing huge, rising into whiteness,
How it shimmered on your snowy gown?
Now we surrender strength to tender trust;
Now time-the grinding stone-smooths us down,
To where the weeds wind round the rusted rings,
To where the worms do their hungry worst
    To shred the dress you wore in worthy youth
    On the sunny morning we were wed.
